Apple M3 chip’s specs revealed as testing starts

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg said in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is ramping up testing of the M3 chip. At least one version of the new platform was spotted with a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU and 36 GB RAM, according to data collected by an App Store developer.

Gurman believes that Macs with the new chip built on the 3 nm process, will begin arriving in late 2023 or early 2024.

Apple M3 chip specs appear with a promising jump in performance

The new CPU will stick to a six performance cores, while the other six will be of the power efficient type. The increase is similar as the M1 generation to the M2, which should hopefully suffice to boost demand. Gurman reminded that the Mac business suffered 31% decline just last quarter, missing analysts’ estimates.

The journalist also suggested the M3 Pro and M3 Max will have similar gains (compared with M1 to M2 series) and the latter will have a 14-core CPU, 40-core GPU, while the M3 Ultra might double everything, reaching a whooping 80-core graphics unit. None of this is confirmed, and we expect to learn details during WWDC, expected to take place next month.
