Samsung Internet Beta v18 lets you extract text from images, improves anti-tracking tech
Samsung has released a new beta version (v18) of the Samsung Internet web browser. This new version brings a way to extract text from images you find online, similar to Apple’s Live Text feature. It also improves the anti-tracking technology so that new tracking technologies can’t track your online behavior.
With Samsung Internet Beta (v18), you can extract text from images on web pages. You can long-press any image and click on Extract Text, which then shows an overflow menu that you can use to copy, share, or translate selected text. This feature works only on phones running Android 12-based One UI 4.1.1, though, so not all Galaxy phones can use it just yet.
Samsung has also tweaked the UI design a bit. The toolbar can now appear either towards the bottom of the screen or beside the URL bar, depending on the screen size. For example, it will appear towards the bottom on regular smartphone models and beside the URL bar at the top on large-screen devices like foldable phones and tablets. The company has also added a Close Tab button.
The South Korean firm has also improved its anti-tracking tech to stop newer tracking methods like CNAME cloaking. Samsung Internet v18 will also default to HTTPS, and this feature has been moved from the Labs section to the Privacy Dashboard menu. You can also allow apps to open links directly in the Private Mode. You can also choose to use extensions in Secure Folder.
Samsung Internet is based on the Chromium web browsing engine, and with v18, the web browser uses the updated the updated engine (v99). You can download Samsung Internet Beta (v18) from Galaxy Store or the Google Play Store. The web browser also works on non-Samsung Android smartphones and tablets.
