New Samsung Galaxy Fit tracker could be in the works

We’re all gearing up for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, but it seems a new Samsung fitness tracker could be in the works too.

A mysterious Samsung device has been spotted at the FCC, reported by The Verge, which is the US regulatory body that has to approve devices before they’re allowed to be sold.

There’s no photos of the device at the FCC, but a diagram, which looks very much like the Galaxy Fit, Samsung’s current fitness tracker.

The Galaxy Fit and budget Galaxy Fit e were launched back in 2019, so we’re well overdue an upgrade.

What’s more, the Galaxy Fit’s price tag now seems high compared to the Inspire HR and Charge 4, while the Galaxy Fit e also lags the Mi Band 5 in the same price bracket.

FCC filing refers to the model number SM-R220

The FCC filing refers to the model number SM-R220, which frankly offers little clues to the name or branding.

We’d like to see Samsung be aggressive with a 2020 fitness tracker, by offering a feature packed fitness band, perhaps bringing ECG and blood pressure, to compete at the top end of the fitness tracker market.

We’ve written extensively at how Fitbit has really sewn this up with the Charge 4. With GPS, VO2 Max, heart rate insights, SpO2 and a $120 price tag, it only offers rivals a race to the bottom on price.

With Samsung getting clearance for advanced biometrics in South Korea, it does have the chance to compete with the Charge 4 in terms of power and health insights – or bolster the Galaxy Fit E to provide an alternative to the likes of the Mi Band 5 and Realme Band.

It’s still unclear whether we’ll see this alongside the release date of the Galaxy Watch 3, which could land on 22 July.

Or it could be a side note at the Unpacked Galaxy Note event on 5 August.
