Xbox app for PC gets Compact mode for handheld gaming PCs

Microsoft has released an updated version of the Xbox app for PC, which comes with several changes and quality of life improvements. One of the new additions is Compact mode, which has been designed with the new wave of handheld gaming PCs in mind.

The Compact mode enables a collapsible side menu, which lets you minimize it so only the icons are visible. This frees up some much needed space on these small screen devices.

Unfortunately, when enabled, you lose direct access to your installed games through the sidebar and they have to be accessed by going into the My Library section. Also, the option to enable the Compact mode is buried a bit within the drop down menu enabled by clicking your profile icon in the top left menu instead of just a button directly on the screen somewhere.

Microsoft says it is working with manufacturers like ASUS to enable the new Compact mode by default on handheld devices like the ROG Ally.

Other changes to the app include updates to the notifications section, where you can now only view unread notifications instead of all of them. A new Gaming Service Repair Tool has been added to fix any issues with Gaming Service or missing content when launching the Xbox app.

The updated Xbox app for PC is now available to download through the Microsoft Store and available on Windows 10 and 11.
