Samsung’s new OLED technology can help make truly bezel-less phones
Samsung Display, the world’s best OLED panel manufacturer for smaller devices, has developed a new technology to make thinner and cheaper OLED panels. It can be used to make truly bezel-less and cheaper smartphones.
The South Korean firm has reportedly started tesing an inkjet-like OCR (Optically Clear Resin) process to spray transparent adhesive on the panel instead of using transparent adhesive tape layers (OCA or Optically Clear Adhesive). It makes the whole manufacturing process less costly and less time-consuming. The company has reportedly overcome all the challenges that are related to inkjet printing.
Moreover, this new bonding technique is easier to work with at the edges and has greater accuracy around the punch hole section. Samsung Display has ordered the OCR equipment required to run mass production trials at its Vietnam factory. As of now, 3M is the leader of the printing equipment market, but Samsung is trying other suppliers to make the process more affordable.
If the trial runs are successful, we can see future smartphones getting thinner and truly bezel-less. The cost of such displays would be lower, too, and that could result in cheaper phones. It could also lead to OLED screens being used in entry-level smartphones.
