Samsung SDI and Stellantis join hands to build second EV battery plant in the US
According to the latest report, Samsung SDI (the battery manufacturing wing of Samsung Electronics) on Monday revealed that it plans to build a second battery manufacturing unit in the USA. This battery plant unit will be developed in partnership between Samsung SDI and Stellantis N.V. in the United States, in addition to their first plant in Indiana.
In a joint press release, both companies signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for the second manufacturing unit. Samsung SDI and Stellantis N.V. aim to begin production in this second unit by 2027 with an initial production capacity of 34GWh (Gigawatt Hours). However, the location of this new plant in the US hasn’t been decided as of yet.
Moreover, no details were shared on the transaction for this battery plant as it was not finalized. Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho said, “The second plant will accelerate our market penetration into the US and help Stellantis advance its US transition to an era of electric vehicles by supplying products featuring the highest levels of safety and quality.”
As noted by Yonhap News Agency, with this new US battery plant, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares added that they will now be able to deliver at least 25 new battery electric vehicles to the North American market by the end of this decade. Besides, both companies added that the annual production capacity of 34GWh is up from the initial aim of 23GWh.
