Samsung SDI and GM are building a $3 billion EV battery plant in the US
Samsung SDI, one of the biggest names in the global battery market, is building a massive EV battery plant in the US in partnership with GM (General Motors). The companies have chosen St. Joseph County, Indiana, to build their joint EV battery plant, the state’s governor Eric Holcomb announced today.

The construction of the new EV battery factory will start next year and will be completed by 2026. During the construction, it will have 1,000 workers, and when it starts operations, it will employ around 1,700 people. It will manufacture nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells that will be used in future electric cars from made by GM. The companies have announced that the new EV battery plant will have a capacity of more than 30GWh.
GM already has five plants in the state of Indiana, employing more than 5,700 workers. The carmaker is now the second-biggest EV maker in the US, behind Tesla, and it is planning to make more than a million EVs annually by 2025. By 2035, the company plans to only sell electric vehicles.
The plan for this EV battery plant was announced in April 2023, but the location was unknown back then. GM’s three previous EV battery plants in the US were built in partnership with LG Energy Solution. A few days ago, GM announced that it would join Tesla’s fast EV charging standard. Samsung SDI is also building another EV battery plant in the US in partnership with Stellantis.
