Samsung picks up two awards for its sustainability efforts in the US

Samsung America has received two accolades from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its efforts towards continuous recycling of e-waste and innovation in Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) products.

As per its newsroom post, Samsung has notably received a Gold Tier Award for recycling e-waste, as well as a Sustained Excellence Award for its eco-product innovations, including the groundbreaking SolarCell Remote for Samsung TVs. Interestingly, this is the 8th consecutive time Samsung has bagged the Gold Tier Award for excellence in responsible e-cycling across the US.

Samsung has set a goal of adding 500,000 tons of recycled plastic to various products by 2030

Samsung’s efforts to collect and recycle amount to an average of 100 million pounds of e-waste a year in the US, which is the greenhouse gas equivalent (GHG) of over two million trees consuming 10 years’ worth of carbon. To further accelerate its mission, Samsung is aiming to add 500,000 tons of recycled plastic that will be used in various products by 2030.

The EPA Sustained Excellence Award specifically recognizes Samsung’s SolarCell Remote, which the company introduced in 2021. This was developed to reduce battery and plastic wastage across the globe.

Samsung has currently implemented the SolarCell Remote with Samsung 4K and 8K QLED (Neo, Q80A, Q70A, Q60A) and MicroLED televisions. It is projected that this SolarCell Remote would help eliminate the disposal of 99 million AA batteries. Besides, the remote is also expected to remove 5,840 tons of GHG over a seven-year period.

In January 2022, Samsung unveiled products that generate electricity from radio frequency in devices like Wi-Fi routers. Moreover, the company plans to introduce the SolarCell Remote to more products.
