Samsung is bringing the 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhone 13

Apple fans have been waiting on the company to introduce the higher 120Hz refresh rate on its iPhones. That hasn’t happened so far. There have been a lot of reports over the past few months highlighting the possibility of the iPhone 13 finally bringing higher refresh rates.

The Cupertino company already relies on Samsung Display for the bulk of the OLED panels that are used in its iPhones. So it won’t come as a surprise to find out that the 120Hz panels will also be supplied by Samsung Display.

Samsung’s OLED panels will bring you the first 120Hz iPhone

According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung Display will be supplying low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays for the top-tier iPhone 13 models. These would presumably be the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The LTPO tech is crucial for bringing the higher 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhones. It results in a more power-efficient backplane that allows for the enhanced refresh rate without the battery life taking a big hit. Samsung Display is reportedly going to be the exclusive supplier of these displays to Apple.

This won’t be the only Samsung-made part inside the new iPhones. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will provide the rigid flexible printed circuit boards (RFPCB) to Apple for the new iPhones. The RFPCB is the part that connects the OLED panel to the main board.

Despite Apple reducing its reliance on Samsung Display, the fruit company is still going to buy a lot of panels. According to one estimate, Samsung Display will supply over 110 million panels to Apple for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 this year.
