Samsung Galaxy M44 surfaces in benchmark listing with surprising chipset

Samsung is working on a new smartphone to bring into the already very crowded mid-range space, and it’s been spotted in the Geekbench online results database today. That’s definitely not out of the ordinary – someone at Samsung has a prototype in hand and is running benchmarks on it.

What is a bit more interesting than the fact that prototypes are being benchmarked is that this one seems to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC. That’s an odd choice on Samsung’s part, first because it’s a Qualcomm chip and not one of its own Exynos parts, but also because the Snapdragon 888 is almost three years old.

Sure, it was the king of its realm back in its day, but that day was in late 2020 and early 2021. We’re very far from those days now, but maybe Qualcomm still had a bunch of 888s unused in its warehouses and Samsung got a great deal?

Anyway, the Galaxy M44 is going to have the model number SM-M446K, and in one version it will come with 6GB of RAM (as benchmarked), though there could be more variations. The prototype ran Android 13, which is what the final product will launch with too, unless it gets delayed to next year. The M44 is expected to arrive in India.
