Samsung Display’s massive investment in OLED is meant for Apple

News broke out earlier today that Samsung is preparing to make a massive multi-billion dollar investment to bolster OLED manufacturing. Why does the company need to do this? Mostly for Apple.

A follow-up exclusive report by Korea JoongAng Daily (via Naver) claims that Samsung Display’s $3.1 billion investment in its OLED manufacturing facility in Asan is meant to strengthen its ties with Apple.

Yo Choong-hoon, head of UBI Research’s display division, claims that “the main client related to the new investment is Apple.”

Samsung Display to enable Apple’s OLED laptops

Aside from supplying Apple with OLED panels for iPads, Samsung Display is now also said to be developing OLED solutions for future MacBooks.

Apple has yet to release an OLED laptop, but the company may do so before 2026. And with Samsung Display now reportedly working on MacBook OLED solutions, it makes sense that Samsung may want to invest in doubling its OLED manufacturing capacity by 2026. Especially since LG Display can’t contribute because it maxed out its production capacity on iPad panels.
