OnePlus to showcase world’s brightest OLED screen

OnePlus and BOE have announced that the two companies, in partnership, will unveil a new display, probably for mobile devices, on October 24, 2023, at an event in Chongqing, China. The latest announcement was made earlier today by the two brands on Weibo. In the announcement post for the event, OnePlus says “Sunrise·East! In 30 years, we have gone from lagging behind to catching up to surpassing. On October 24, OnePlus joins hands with BOE to invite you to witness a historic moment for Chinese screens!”

Neither OnePlus nor BOE have revealed any details about the upcoming display. However, popular tipster, Digital Chat Station says that this new screen will have a “2K” resolution and a brightness of 3,000 nits. The post also claims that BOE will later announce another display with a brightness of 3,000 nits which will have a “1.5K” resolution. According to DCS, the two displays will have 2,160Hz PWM dimming and “single pulse DC.”

OnePlus Open hold the title for having the brightest display

Yesterday, OnePlus unveiled the company’s first foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. This device has the same book-like foldable design as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to the company, the outer and the inner (foldable) displays of the OnePlus Open have a peak brightness of 2,800 nits, which has created quite some headlines as no other mobile display on the market has such a high brightness. If the leak from Digital Chat Station is true, OnePlus and BOE will be breaking this record with their upcoming display.

Reportedly, this display from OnePlus and BOE will make its way to the OnePlus 12, which is expected to launch in the next few months. According to the leaks we have so far, the Galaxy S24 will feature a display with a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. That means the display on the OnePlus 12 will be brighter than that on the Galaxy S24.

Author’s Note: On paper, the displays of the OnePlus Open have a higher peak and maximum brightness compared to the screens on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to a test from GSMArena, however, the foldable display of the OnePlus Open isn’t as bright as the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in real life (1,238 nits vs 1,216 nits). So, even if OnePlus and BOE launch a display that has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits on paper, there’s no guarantee that it will top the charts in real life.
