New Sony PS5 update adds support for 4K 120Hz HDR to Samsung TVs

Sony has finally released an update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console that fixes the compatibility issues with Samsung TVs. The PS5 was supposed to offer support for 4K gaming at 120 frames per second with HDR enabled, but up until now this mode was not possible on Samsung TVs due to a bug related to HDMI 2.1 and Sony’s firmware.

Samsung confirmed back in January that it is working together with Sony to address the issue. Sony said it will likely release the update in March but that obviously didn’t happen. Thankfully, the firmware update is apparently ready for the masses. Sony has yet to publish the update’s changelog on its official page but according to Forbes, the company is now rolling out the update to PS5 units worldwide.

Once updated, the PS5 will finally be capable of displaying 4K HDR content at 120fps, but that’s not all. Additional reports claim that the latest update finally allows PS5 owners to move games from the internal SSD to a USB drive, though this feature is meant only for storage purposes as USB drives aren’t fast enough to match the internal SSD. Unfortunately, support for M.2 storage is still missing but it should be added later this summer, potentially leading to increased SSD sales for Samsung’s memory business.
