It’ll now cost you $3 per month to remove Amazon Prime Video ads

There’s bad news if you subscribe to Amazon Prime Video. The video streaming service will soon start showing you ads on movies and shows, despite the fact that you’re paying for the subscription. If you want to remove those ads, it’s going to cost you $3 per month extra.

Amazon has confirmed today that starting early next year, there will be “limited advertisements” in Prime Video shows and movies. The company did mention that pricing for the ad-free tier will be confirmed for additional countries in the future.

Amazon Prime Video ads will cost $3 to remove

This is a major change to the way content is offered through the streaming service. No ads were previously served next to the TV and movie content in Amazon Prime Video. The streaming service provides access to a wide variety of third-party content as well as Amazon Original movies and shows.

It currently costs $9 per month if purchased separately or is available for free with a general Amazon Prime subscription. The company hasn’t revealed how many ads users will have to watch, opting to stick with the “limited advertisements” description, so it could be anywhere from a few seconds or a few minutes per hour in length.

Amazon did add that the service will have “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers,” but again, it’s difficult to quantify that until the ads start being served. Amazon says that ads in Prime Video content will be launched in the United States, Germany, UK, and Canada early next year. The same will follow for Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, and Australia later on in 2024.
