How to Turn off Live Activities

It’s been a few months since Apple launched the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, along with the final version of iOS 16. However, there were some features that Apple was expected to launch with iOS 16, that didn’t actually make it. Live Activities is one such feature, as it wasn’t actually made available until the final release of iOS 16.1. If you’re like us and love tinkering around with new features, you likely already turned on Live Activities. However, if you aren’t a fan or haven’t found any apps that prove to be useful, you can also turn off Live Activities.

What Are Live Activities?

While Apple really swung for the fences with its overhauled Lock Screen interface, the company didn’t stop there. iOS 16 introduces some long-overdue changes to how notifications can be viewed, partially expanding on the minor changes with iOS 15. One feature that has kind of flown under the radar is called Live Activities.

During the WWDC ’22 keynote, this feature was shown off and will provide live updates for your various apps. These include seeing updated information about the score of a baseball game, or how far away your Uber is from picking you up. Apple also introduced a separate Live Activities API for developers to take advantage of.

How to Turn off Live Activities

Many of us rushed to turn on Live Activities as soon as the feature was made available in iOS 16.1. And while the list of apps that are compatible with Live Activities continues to grow, this might just not be a feature that you find very useful. With that in mind, here’s how you can turn off Live Activities:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 16.1 or higher.
  2. Scroll down and tap Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Scroll down again until you reach the Allow Access When Locked section.
  4. Tap the toggle next to Live Activities to the Off position.
  5. Exit the Settings app.

As is the case with many iPhone features, you can always go back and re-enable Live Activities if you find an app or use case for the feature. We’ve previously covered some of our favorites, but it’s important to keep a lookout for new and exciting apps that can enhance your iPhone experience. Otherwise, it’s just something that you might forget about entirely and will never actually use.
