Google Play Games for Windows will now compete with Steam and Epic

In 2022, Google launched the Google Play Games application for Windows. It offers a collection of Android games and allows you to download and play them on the operating system. That’s not all though. The marketplace also offers games native to the platform. However, there’s a limited collection of those as Google works with only select partners on that front. Fortunately, that’s going to change soon.

At the Games Developer Summit, Google announced that starting “this year,” the company will allow all developers to publish games made for Windows on the Google Play Games marketplace for Windows. With that, Google Play Games will become more like Epic Store and Steam on the OS, and compete with those marketplaces more fiercely. Google says that developers interested in publishing their games on Google Play Games can right away start expressing their interest.

That means, we could soon see AAA games, such as Baldur’s Gate 3 or Starfield on Google Play Games for Windows. At this point, you might be thinking why you shouldn’t go with Epic Store and Steam instead as they offer a wider collection of games. Well, you are right, and that’s why I think Google’s games marketplace for Windows might not gain momentum unless the company has something bigger planned.
