Galaxy AI’s biggest advantage is its hybrid operation

Samsung has ushered in a new era of functionality for its smartphones with Galaxy AI, a suite of artificial intelligence-powered features that make its devices more efficient and intelligent than ever before. Galaxy AI isn’t something that Samsung has put together haphazardly to cash in on the AI gold rush.

It’s the culmination of years of efforts and technology advancement. The company has also sought to maintain a distinctive edge against the competition by relying on a hybrid operation model that makes Galaxy AI more capable and secure.

Galaxy AI blends on-device and cloud AI for better functionality

Kim Young-jip, head of Samsung’s AI team, revealed that the company is focusing on developing AI to provide new ways of interaction between devices and users to improve productivity, communication, and entertainment.

As they were developing Galaxy AI solutions, Samsung researchers focused on how AI could help with users’ daily life. They zeroed in on the very core features of a phone, calling and recording as well note taking, and built solutions like real-time phone call translation and transcription as well note summarization in Galaxy AI.

Samsung focused on improving on-device AI, in which no data is exported and all AI processing happens on the device. This involved training AI models on huge amounts of data and then reducing the size through highly advanced optimization processes. Galaxy AI can also intelligently switch between on-device and cloud modes to enhance productivity and data security. For example, the Galaxy S24’s translation features support 13 languages in on-device and 38 languages in cloud mode.

The company will continue to train its AI models to enhance the capability and also introduce new AI features down the line. Samsung is fully committed to Galaxy AI and we’ll soon see many of its features being released to over 100 million devices.
