Sony drops support for Email app from Xperia 5 onwards

We have often written about the number of services that Sony has been dropping over the last 18 months or so. Well we have more news on that front today across multiple fronts:

1) Sony has confirmed that the official Sony Email app will not be supported from the Xperia 5 and future devices. The Sony Email app will not be available on the Google Play Store for these devices unfortunately. It’s a shame to see the app dropped, but it’s hardly a surprise given Sony’s stance towards other first-party apps.

2) Sony has also been sending emails to users to confirm that it will no longer send emails on software updates for Xperia handsets. The Software update newsletter will be dropped from 16 December 2019. Notifications will continue to be sent directly to the device when a new update is available.

3) Sony’s Album app will drop support for the ‘Backup – Powered by Amazon’ feature on 31 March 2020. A new update to the Album app will see this feature removed at the time. Even if you don’t update the app, the Amazon Backup feature will still not work, you will simply get an error message. Further information can be found here.

It’s unfortunate to see features being dropped, as we have now been accustomed to from Sony. We’ll keep you posted on any other changes as they come.

Thanks Licafyum, Miguel and Thusitha!
