Samsung’s latest foldable panel is MIL-STD-810 certified

Samsung announced its 7.6” foldable panel, similar to the one used in the Galaxy Z Fold5, passed the US Department of Defense Test Method Standard, better known as MIL-STD-810. The standard confirms the product can function without damage in harsh conditions such as extreme temperature changes and external shock.

Samsung Display revealed it is the first company in the world to acquire this type of military-grade certification for foldable OLED panels.

Every product that goes through the test process must withstand extreme conditions, such as working after four hours of being covered in a 6 mm ice sheet after being sprayed with water at -10 degrees C.

The panel also continued to work when the ambient temperature varied between -32 and +63 degrees for 2 hours each; every test must be completed three times.

The stress test also includes 26 drops from 4 feet (1.22 meters, which is the real-world height usage), and the panel also withstood 10.5G pressure through speed rotations.

Samsung Display representative told Korean media that foldable devices are not lacking in durability, which is a common misconception. Expectations are that this standard will open the door for wider applications of foldable panels in the near future.
