Samsung India’s Galaxy S22 launch event was a joke

Samsung finally unveiled the Indian pricing of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra via a live stream today. As a Samsung enthusiast based in India, I was looking forward to it for quite some time. However, the “event”, if one can even call it that, was one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen in recent history. Here’s why.

For starters, Samsung India initially said that the Galaxy S22 India launch event would start at 12:30 PM local time. It then got pushed back to 14:00 for no discernable reason. The actual presentation itself lasted around fifteen minutes, most of which was filled with marketing fluff. Now, there isn’t anything wrong with that, but what followed raises a lot of questions.

Samsung India, in its infinite wisdom, refused to divulge the pre-order dates, pre-order bonuses or even when one will be able to buy a Galaxy S22 in India. That negates the entire point of the presentation, which was little more than a 30-second price reveal buried within 14 minutes of noise.

Now, if you thought that was bad, the proverbial icing on the cake comes now: We received communication from Samsung about the pre-order date shortly after the conference ended. Something that should have been revealed on stream in high definition was sent as an addendum. Samsung India quite literally concocted a pre-order date after the launch event and sent it out in the most inefficient way imaginable. A simple tweet would have sufficed, but Samsung India is too busy singing praises of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s S Pen to care.

There is still no word about the most important bit, the sale date, though, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any updates. But hey, at least the Indian Galaxy S22 gets a Snapdragon SoC this time around. Not the best one we’ve seen in recent years, but a Snapdragon chip nonetheless.

Lastly, the lack of Galaxy Tab S8 announcements is also a tad disappointing. Then again, India always gets high-end Galaxy tablets weeks or even months after other regions, so there’s no surprise here.
