Montblanc Summit 3 is the next smartwatch to run Wear 3.0

Montblanc has dropped its new Summit 3 smartwatch, and it’s the first non-Samsung device to run Wear 3.0.

As usual, the Swiss watch/fashion brands are rubbish about talking technology – so there’s some enormous vagaries about what’s in store here.

Following on from 2021’s cheaper Summit 2 Lite, the Montblanc Summit 3 lineup includes three titanium case options: grey (with black calf and blue rubber straps); black (black calf leather and black rubber straps); and bicolor (black and silver) green leather and black rubber straps.

It really looks the part from the press images released by Montblanc, although we don’t have any detail on the screen technology or case size.

The big story here is, of course, Wear OS. Montblanc says its Summit 3 is powered by the “latest version of Wear OS by Google.”

The whole thing is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100+ processor, which seems to be the minimum requirement for running Wear OS 3, so it’s all good from that respect.

And this makes it only the second smartwatch run Wear 3.0, after the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 launched with the OS back in 2021.

Wear OS 3.0 is scheduled for the Google Pixel Watch (slated for Fall 2022), and it should land on a series of existing smartwatches already running 4100+. That includes the Fossil Gen 6 as well as Skagen Gen 6 smartwatches, TicWatch Pro 3 and Tag Heuer Connected Calibre E4.

However, there’s been little word on when those updates will happen, with Fossil recently hinting that it would be delayed until the end of the year.

Montblanc says that its improved the fitness tracking experience – and you can now follow workouts from the watch itself. However, it seems that the fitness tracking won’t be powered by Fitbit, as we’ve seen on the Google Pixel Watch.

Tracked metrics include step tracking, sleep monitoring including the different sleep phases, and blood oxygen measurement

In terms of battery life, Montblanc promises improved battery ‘capacity’ over the Summit 2 – without any further details. We think it’s safe to assume that it’s still a single day.

The Montblanc Summit 3 arrives 15 July for €1,250.
