Galaxy S23 to soon get 2x portrait option with the next software update

The Galaxy S23 series offers excellent camera performance in varied situations with its flexible hardware and a feature-rich camera app. Experts can also use the Camera Assistant and Expert RAW apps to extract more from the camera. However, one feature is still missing from Samsung’s newest high-end phones—2x magnification in portrait mode—and is coming soon.

Samsung has already released a significant software update to improve the camera performance of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. The company is expected to release one more substantial update later this month to improve low-light photography and fix the HDR halo effect. Now, Samsung’s camera development team has revealed that it has added the 2x zoom option in the Galaxy S23’s camera app portrait mode.

Galaxy S23 to get 2x zoom option in portrait mode with second May 2023 update

Currently, the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra only have 1x and 3x zoom modes in the camera app’s portrait mode. The 1x option gives you portrait shots from the primary camera, while the 3x option gives you portrait shots from the 3x telephoto camera. However, some people find the 1x option too wide and the 3x mode too zoomed in. That’s where the 2x option can come to the rescue.

Samsung is adding the 2x zoom option to the portrait camera mode, which will crop in from the primary camera’s frame. This feature will be released to all the Galaxy S23 series phones with the next software update, which is expected to be released later this month (May 2023). The company will reveal whether this feature will come to the Galaxy S22 series after releasing the update to the Galaxy S23.
