Bungie details how the Vault of Glass raid will return in Destiny 2

In an interview, Assistant Game Director for Destiny 2, Joe Blackburn, provided some insight about how Bungie is planning to bring the Vault of Glass raid from the original Destiny into the sequel. When asked how different the Destiny 2 version would feel, Blackburn stated that “I think the ultimate goal here is to make it feel like Vault of Glass felt when the first time you did it, which is probably pretty different than if we just did a straight port of Vault of Glass.” Because of all the new weapons, armors, and mods that players have collected over the years, Guardians in Destiny 2 are much stronger than they were in the first game. Therefore, says Blackburn, Bungie is going to make Vault of Glass more difficult while keeping the overall style and mechanics of each encounter the same.

“We definitely are going to make changes to make it feel challenging, like it felt before,” he said. “But we don’t want to go too far, and make it feel like it’s a different raid.”

In addition to the raid itself, Blackburn also confirmed that Vault of Glass weapons will be returning as well. However, the weapons won’t be identical to their original versions. Instead, Bungie is aiming to recreate the weapons with the context of the Destiny 2’s loot pool in mind, keeping the weapons fundamentally identical while making small changes that will help the guns fit into the sequel’s sandbox.

“There’s obviously some (Destiny 2) updating to go into those perk pools,” Blackburn said. “But no one is out to create a Found Verdict or a Fatebringer here that feels radically different than the original Fatebringer. Because then it just feels like we’re lying to players, right? Like, ‘That’s not what Fatebringer feels like.’ Everyone knows what the recoil pattern is on that gun. Everyone knows what perks they wanted.”
