Audio and video calling going live on X/Twitter

Twitter’s name change to X once Elon Musk took over the company didn’t go down well with long-time users of the service. According to Musk, however, the name change was important because of his ambitions to make X the “everything app”, letting users do everything from tweeting out 140-character messages and following the news to making payments and creating content as seen on services like TikTok.

Musk had also revealed that X would be getting video and audio calling support, and an early version of those features is now getting a wide rollout. As expected, these features are only for those with the $8 monthly X Premium subscription, or at least the ability to initiate calls is. Receiving calls is available for free accounts as well.

X Premium users can initiate and receive calls

According to the X help center, calls can be received from accounts you follow and from people in your address book if you are using a smartphone and have allowed the X app access to your contacts. Calling another user also requires that user to have sent you a direct message at least once.

Video and voice calling on X has functionality similar to other services and apps, like the option to mute, put the call on speaker, switch between front and rear cameras, and enable and disable camera feed. The user also has the option to disable voice and video calling if they aren’t interested in using X for the same.

For now, voice and audio calling is only available on iOS, but it will be arriving on Android in the near future. It is also available through the browser on desktop and laptop PCs.
