YouTube Premium offers better video quality on iOS than Android

YouTube has just announced five new features for Premium subscribers. While you’d expect all those features to be available across Android and iOS platforms alike, unfortunately, that isn’t the case. One of the five new features offers better video quality at 1080p resolution, and it’s currently available only for iOS, despite Android users paying the same amount of money for the Premium subscription.

1. YouTube now offers 1080p Premium videos with a higher bitrate

YouTube has added a new video quality option called ‘1080p Premium.’ According to Google, it has “Enhanced Bitrate,” which will make videos look “extra crisp and clear,” and it will be particularly noticeable in videos that have “lots of detail and motion.” The new video quality option will soon be available alongside the standard 1080p video quality option in YouTube’s iOS app.

While the higher video quality option is available only for iPhones at the moment, Google says it’s soon coming to the web, too. Although there’s no information regarding its availability for Android, it should be available for the platform soon after. This feature can particularly make videos look better on Samsung smartphones and tablets.

2. Video queuing is now available on smartphones and tablets

Coming back to other new features that were announced today for Premium subscribers, the first one allows you to queue videos on your smartphone or tablet. For instance, if there’s a video playing on your phone and you would like the app to start playing another one automatically after this one ends, you can add it to the queue. This feature has been available on the web for quite some time now.

3. iOS users can now watch YouTube videos together on FaceTime

The third feature allows iPhone users to watch YouTube videos together while they are on FaceTime calls by leveraging Apple’s SharePlay feature. This feature is already available on Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets for quite some time now through Google Meet Live Sharing.

4. Resume videos from your where you previously left off

YouTube is also rolling out an option that most people would find extremely useful. This option enables YouTube Premium users to start watching videos where they previously left off. The best part about this feature is that it works between various types of devices. For example, if you leave a video in the middle on your smartphone, YouTube will give you the option to resume the video from the same point on your tablet or TV.

5. Smart Downloads

The last feature is called ‘Smart Downloads’, and as the name suggests, it automatically downloads recommended videos on your device so that you can enjoy them even when you go offline unplanned. While this feature could be useful for a few people, it will definitely be a storage hog for users who have limited free space on their devices.
