YouTube Music app rolling out to older Wear OS watches this week

After releasing on Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch4 smartwatches, the YouTube Music app was still missing from all the other Wear OS smartwatches that preceded. You see, ever since Google Play Music was replaced by YouTube Music, the Wear OS companion app was discontinued along with it, and Wear OS wouldn’t see a proper replacement for it until recently with Samsung’s new smartwatches running Wear OS 3, and until now with other watches running Wear OS 2.X.

According to The Verge, the YouTube Music companion app is now rolling out to Wear OS 2.X smartwatches. Google confirms to the outlet that the updated app is rolling out this week to Fossil and Michael Kors Gen 6 smartwatches, and Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch E3. More Wear OS 2.X devices will be getting the app “later this year”.

Like the recently updated Spotify app for Wear OS, YouTube Music will be able to download tracks for offline playback. These tracks refresh whenever the smartwatch connects to Wi-Fi. The caveat, however, is this will only be possible if you are a YouTube Music or YouTube Premium subscriber.

It has been more than a year since Google announced that it was sunsetting the Google Play Music Wear OS app. Google would eventually announce a YouTube Music app for Wear OS at Google’s virtual I/O this year, when Google announced its unified Wear OS 3 in collaboration with Samsung.
