Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Studio launched this week in the United States and Canada. Due to the ongoing global chip shortage, the unique 2-in-1 PC won’t launch in other markets until sometime in early 2022. In comes Big Apple Buddy, which helps customers purchase devices outside of the limited regions the Surface Laptop Studio is available in.

Big Apple Buddy ships devices through FedEx or DHL, allowing people to order the Surface Laptop Studio or other gadgets in a much wider range of regions. Big Apple Buddy sources its devices from official retailers, Best Buy in the case of the Surface Laptop Studio.

Ordering the Surface Laptop Studio through Big Apple Buddy will cost more than if you were able to purchase the device directly from Microsoft or a local retailer. A lot of the increased cost is to cover shipping.

For example, a Surface Laptop Studio with an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage would normally cost $1,600. Ordering that model in the UK would require at least an additional $196 for shipping. Some shipping options are as high as $206. Big Apple Buddy also charges a service fee of $50.

On top of the service fee and cost of shipping, you’ll have to pay any duty fees or import taxes owed. Fees like this are often based on the value of the device shipped to your country, meaning you could end up paying quite a bit to import a Surface Laptop Studio.

Big Apple Buddy estimates that an order to the UK would cost 20% of the value of the device, which would be over $300. That’s only an estimate, so the exact tax you’d have to pay could vary.

In total, an order of a Surface Laptop Studio to the UK would cost at least $2,165, and that’s to get the model that normally costs $1,600. That’s a difference of over $500, but it does allow you to get the device now rather than having to wait for Microsoft to expand its availability.
