Xbox led June 2021 NPD in dollar sales, Nintendo Switch sold the most units
Mat Piscatella, an analyst for the NPD group who focuses on the gaming industry, breaks down the results for the U.S. market every month. For the month of June 2021, Piscatella’s Twitter thread revealed the top selling consoles and games, including the news that Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles were the best sellers for the month in dollar sales, setting a new record for Xbox sales in June. The Nintendo Switch retained its streak as the best-selling console in units sold.
Supply continues to be far below overall demand for both the Xbox Series consoles and Sony’s PS5, the latter of which is currently the fastest-selling console in U.S. history. In addition to chip shortages, Microsoft has been upgrading its Xbox Cloud Gaming servers with Xbox Series X hardware, enabling 1080p 60 FPS streaming and the ability to stream some Xbox Series Optimized games.
For games, the PS5 exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was the best-selling game of June 2021. Resident Evil Village fell to the sixth spot, while Sea of Thieves rose back into the top 20 games, seeing growth thanks to the recent expansion, A Pirate’s Life.
