Western Digital app leaves Windows PCs and Macs exposed

Western Digital’s EdgeRover app recently put PCs and Macs in a tricky spot due to a traversal bug that left machines vulnerable to “disclosure of sensitive information” and DoS attacks.

Western Digital didn’t share many details on the specifics of the issue at hand in its brief report on the situation, but it did state the aforementioned risks and noted which version update you’ll need in order to stay protected (1.5.1-594). As reported by BleepingComputer, threat researcher Xavier Danest uncovered the problem and shared the discovery with WD.

Though the issue has been addressed and you can protect yourself by updating to the latest version of EdgeRover, it’s not clear how many people have been negatively impacted by the vulnerability.

This isn’t the only hiccup Western Digital has had to address in 2022. It recently declared itself the victim of a massive contamination situation that rendered 6.5 exabytes’ worth of memory product off the market, amplifying the already brutal global shortage of PC components.

With that said, even if its plants and apps haven’t had a perfect 2022, it’s no secret that Western Digital still makes some of the best memory products on the market. If you’re in the market for the best SSD, WD offerings are usually among the contenders, so long as you have the cash to afford them since they’re not the cheapest options.
