Western Digital announces speedy WD_BLACK SN850X and P40 SSDs

Western Digital announced two new gaming SSDs today at its What’s Next event. Both of the storage devices have fast read speeds and look to compete with the best SSDs. The WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD hits speeds of 7,300 MB/s while the WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD tops out at 2,000 MB/s. Both of the SSDs will launch this summer, though only the WD_BLACK SN850X has a specific release month (July).

The WD_BLACK SN850X is a PCIe Gen4 SSD with low latency, predictive loading, and adaptive thermal management. Gamers can optimize performance with the WD_BLACK Dashboard and Game Mode 2.0. The SSD also has an optional heatsink for the 1TB and 2TB models and RGB lighting.

The WD_BLACK P4 is a portable SSD with a UWB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. It also has an LED display that can be synced to RGB ecosystems to personalize its look.

The WD_BLACK SN850X will be available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities starting at $190 in July. The WD_BLACK P40 will launch at some point in summer 2022 and have models of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB starting at $120.
