Week 13 in review: Huawei P40 lineup, Redmi K30 Pro duo are here

The final full week of March brought us a bunch of high-profile phone announcements and a number of high-profile leaks.

Huawei unveiled The P40 Pro, the P40 Pro+ and the regular P40 and here’s the quick rundown – all of them pack premium 50MP main cameras with the biggest smartphone sensor around, they use the 5G-ready Kirin 990 chipset and lack Google Services.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ is a true pioneer with a 10x optical-zoom periscope camera, which delivers the longest optical zoom on a phone these days – 240mm. The P40 Pro+ also has the fastest wireless charging at 40W. The Huawei P40 Pro+ will be available from June 2020, priced at €1,399.

The Huawei P40 Pro will be available from April 7 starting at €1,000 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. The Huawei P40 will cost €800 when it launches on April 7, there’s only one memory configuration available – 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage.

Redmi finally made the K30 Pro official alongside the K30 Pro Zoom. The two share a 6.67-inch OLED, a Snapdragon 865, UFS 3.1 storage and a 4,700mAh battery with 33W charging, but the K30 Pro adds an 8MP 3x zoom camera, instead of the 5MP macro on the vanilla K30 Pro. The main camera is a 64MP snapper that will output 16MP snaps.

The Redmi K30 Pro will be available in grey, purple, white and blue colors. The base version starts at CNY 2,999($425) for a 6/128GB model. The K30 Pro Zoom base is CNY 3,799 ($535). Both variants of the K30 Pro are up for pre-order in China with official sales tipping off on April 4. There are no details on international availability just yet.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were a hot topic this week. We saw press renders as well as detailed specs and the OnePlus 8 Pro even leaked in the wild.

Both will be unveiled on April 15 with Snapdragon 865, 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 30W fast charging (although some reports point to 50W charging on the 8 Pro). The vanilla OnePlus 8 will have a 6.55-inch 90Hz AMOLED and 48MP + 16MP + 2MP cameras. The OnePlus 8 Pro will have a 6.78-inch 120Hz AMOLED and 48MP + 48MP + 8MP + 5MP cameras.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A31. It has a 48MP + 8MP ultrawide + 5MP depth + 5MP macro camera array and a huge 5,000mAh battery. We’re yet to find out the A31 price and availability.
