The Xiaomi 12 trio receives perfect A+ marks from DisplayMate

DisplayMate has published its findings from testing the Xiaomi 12 series displays and all three phones got an A+ mark. The 12 and 12 Pro set or matched 15 display records, 7 of which were rated “visually indistinguishable from perfect”. The 12X is one record short of matching it pricier siblings.

Each phone showed strengths in different areas. The Xiaomi 12 Pro is the only one of the trio to feature a higher resolution 1,440 x 3,200 px display, giving it an edge in sharpness. It also proved the brightest, hitting 980 nits at 100% APL (average picture level, i.e. how much of the screen is showing white) and 1,541 nits at low APL.

Xiaomi calibrates the display at the factory, so the 12-series offers perfect color and contrast accuracy. When set to the right mode, the displays offer perfect sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage, Vivid and Saturated modes go over 100%.

One thing to note is that both the Xiaomi 12 and 12X displays can render 68 billion colors – in other words, they have 12-bit panels. In fact, those are the first 12-bit panels on smartphones as far as we can tell. You will need footage encoded with Dolby Vision to enjoy the full benefits of 12-bit color – good thing that the phones come with a Dolby Vision certification.

Note that the 12 Pro has a 10-bit panel, offering 1 billion colors. On the plus side, the Pro is the only one to have an LTPO panel, giving it multiple refresh rates between 1 Hz and 120 Hz.
