Smartphone shipments in China bounce back in March

According to new data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), smartphone shipments in the country totaled 21 million units for the past month. This represents a 3-fold increase compared to February, which was saw the worst performance in recent memory but the new figure is still 20% below shipments levels from March 2019.

Apple surged to 2.5 million phone shipments last month which is a notable improvement over the estimated 500,000 units it moved in February according to Chinese government data. With local online and offline retailers back to regular working times and logistics firms across the country ramping up shipments, expectations are looking better for the upcoming quarter.

Xiaomi’s recent earnings report revealed that its smartphone sales have bounced back to 80% of normal levels and the company’s CFO expects continued improvement in the coming months. Still, it remains to be seen how consumers’ purchasing habits will respond to the economic slowdown.
