Sea of Thieves just had its biggest month ever, crossing 15 million players

Rare’s pirate simulator Sea of Thieves just keeps growing. According to a new press release from Joe Neate, executive producer at Rare, Sea of Thieves recently crossed 15 million players, with over a million copies sold on Steam since its launch on that platform in June. Additionally, Neate says that June 2020 was the biggest month for the game since its launch, with over 3.3 million players.

This is impressive continued growth, as our last official player count for the game was 10 million players earlier this year in January. Sea of Thieves was the biggest new IP from Xbox Game Studios this generation back in January, so that title is only cemented 5 million additional players added in a year.

Sea of Thieves has seen near-innumerable updates since its original launch, adding Megalodons, new items, quests, pets like cats and more. While we don’t have exact details yet, Rare has hinted at Xbox Series X upgrades being available when the console launches in Holiday 2020. In the meanwhile, the next update for the game is called Ashen Winds and it adds a flamethrower skull weapon.
