Samsung’s tablets will get over 20 tablet optimized apps with Android 13

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic brought some growth in the tablet segment, Google started focusing on tablets once again. With Android 12L, it introduced UI improvements to take advantage of tablets’ bigger screens. With Android 13, it is introducing various apps with a tablet-optimized design.

At the Google I/O 2022 event last night, the company revealed 20 new tablet-optimized apps with new designs. These apps include Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Family Link, Google Maps, Google Meet, Google Messages, Google Photos, Google Play, Google Translate, Google TV, YouTube, YouTube Music, and more. These apps use a multi-column layout to take full advantage of a tablet’s bigger display.

Google said that it has encouraged third-party app developers to make tablet versions of their apps. Canva, Facebook, TikTok, and Zoom have already started making tablet-optimized apps. To help users discover these upcoming tablet apps, Google is making changes to the Google Play Store. Users can select filters to find tablet-optimized apps.

Samsung has already made its stock apps optimized for tablets, and with several other tablet-optimized apps coming later this year, using tablets will become a much more immersive experience. And Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab S8 and the Pixel Tablet can properly compete with Apple’s iPad lineup.
