Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL camera sensor coming to smartphones next year

Samsung had unveiled the world’s first 200MP smartphone camera sensorISOCELL HP1—a few months ago. It was earlier rumored that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a 200MP camera, but that isn’t actually the case. However, that doesn’t mean Samsung’s flagship camera isn’t coming to smartphones from other brands.

According to tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), Motorola will be the first smartphone brand to use Samsung’s 200MP camera sensor. The company is expected to launch a smartphone with a 200MP camera sometime in the first half of 2022. In the second half of 2022, the ISOCELL HP1 sensor will reportedly feature inside a Xiaomi smartphone. The tipster also mentioned that Samsung will use the 200MP sensor in its own smartphones, but didn’t give any particular launch time frame.

The ISOCELL HP1 is a 1/1.22-inch sensor with a 200MP resolution and a native pixel size of 0.64μm. It supports 2×2 (50MP images with 1.28µm pixels) and 4×4 pixel binning (12.5MP images with 2.65μm pixels) modes for higher light sensitivity in low-light conditions. In bright conditions, it is claimed to offer detailed images with a wide dynamic range and up to 8K 30fps videos. It can even record 4K 120fps videos with a wide field of view.

Some tipsters claim that this 200MP sensor will first be used in a higher mid-range Galaxy smartphone in Samsung’s lineup. In our opinion, the ISOCELL GN2 is Samsung’s best camera sensor. It is a 1/1.12-inch sensor (bigger than the 200MP ISOCELL HP1) with 1.4μm native pixel size. It features Dual Pixel Pro autofocus technology, Staggered HDR, 8K 30fps video recording, and 4K 120fps video recording.
