Samsung TVs get RNIB’s accreditation for meeting accessibility criteria

Samsung has announced that its 2020 TVs have received the Tried and Tested rating from the UK’s RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind) for meeting the accessibility criteria for the visually impaired. This is the first time in the industry that a TV has received the accreditation from the agency.

RNIB awards the Tried and Tested accreditation to apps, products, services, and websites that meet the criteria for accessibility for people with impaired vision. This shows Samsung’s commitment to making its products easier to use for all consumers. The company has worked with RNIB since 2013 to make sure that its products are suited with proper features to offer accessibility for all users.

Samsung TVs come with features such as High Contrast mode and Voice Guide since 2014. The High Contrast mode displays graphic information with opaque black backgrounds and white font for enhanced visibility. The Voice Guide feature enables the TV to read aloud program information. RNIB presented the ‘Inclusive Society Award’ to Samsung in 2016.

The South Korean firm’s 2020 TV lineup comes with an upgraded Voice Guide feature that reads program information, remote control instructions, and accessibility features. Users can also adjust the pitch and speed of the voice. The Digital Magnifier feature enhances and expands images and text on the TV during smartphone mirroring.

The Focus Enlarge feature magnifies specific fonts on the TV that are related to the menus, TV control, and volume control. Samsung’s new smart TVs also come with a feature that automatically recognizes and enlarges the sign area. They also offer the ability to adjust and move subtitle positions.

Kangwook Chun, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “With a growing variety of content and features, people are now having more fun with their smart TVs.
