Samsung to bolster production of EV batteries for Tesla, BMW
Samsung SDI has reportedly secured Tesla as a client for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. After prototyping 4680-type batteries for Tesla last year, Samsung went ahead and ran a pilot manufacturing line in Cheonan. The test results are in, and according to reports, Samsung is now ready to move on to the next step.
The next step will be the building of a new mass-manufacturing plant in Malaysia. The test production line that ran in Cheonan had a production rate per minute of 20 PPM, but Samsung aims to have a manufacturing capacity of 200-300PPM at this new facility in Malaysia next year. (via The Elec)
Samsung SDI is developing two battery designs, one for BMW
The recent report goes on to mention that Samsung is, in fact, developing two cylindrical battery types. There’s the 4680, which measures 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height, and a second design that sources claim to be shorter.
Samsung has reportedly developed this second cylindrical battery design at the request of BMW, but other details are unknown.
In other news, Samsung and BMW have reached a separate agreement recently. As per reports, the Korean tech giant will be responsible for supplying 4 million in-car OLED panels for the German automaker throughout the next few years.
