Samsung ships more phones with LCD displays than OLED amid global component shortage
Samsung sold more smartphones in 2021 compared to 2020. However, the company faced a lot of component shortages and supply chain issues, leading to increased manufacturing costs. Now, it is being reported that the company shipped more phones with LCD displays than OLED screens.
According to a new report from market research firm Omdia, Samsung shipped 135.1 million smartphones last year with LCD screens, accounting for 50.3% of its overall shipments. It shipped 135.8 million smartphones in 2021 with OLED displays, accounting for 49.7% of all shipments.
Compared to 2020’s figures, Samsung’s LCD smartphone shipments increased 41%, while OLED phone shipments decreased by 15%. According to the report, the company may have chosen to release more phones with LCD screens as a cost-cutting measure as prices of processors increased over the past couple of years.
According to Omdia, the average selling price of Samsung’s LCD and OLED smartphones dropped in 2021. It means that it is more profitable for the South Korean firm to sell low-end smartphones with LCD displays.
