Samsung SDI establishes first EV battery R&D center in the United States

Samsung SDI has finished setting up its first research and development center in the USA. Located in Boston, the purpose of this new facility is to give Samsung a competitive edge in the electric vehicle battery market.

This new development follows a similar announcement Samsung made earlier in the summer when SDI opened up a new R&D facility in Munich. And next year, Samsung SDI plans to set up a new R&D center in China. (via The Korea Herald)

Samsung SDI is developing new battery tech and searching for talent globally

The electric vehicle battery market is booming, and Samsung SDI seeks to get a leg up on the competition by developing new technologies and securing new talent through its R&D centers.

Samsung SDI will use its R&D center in the United States to develop new battery technologies for electric vehicles in collaboration with local startups and universities. The company hopes to grow its talent pool through an expansive global R&D network.

“Starting with the ones in the US and Europe, we will continue to make more R&D centers in various regions,” revealed Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho.

Last year, Samsung SDI announced that it’s building its first EV battery manufacturing plant in the USA in collaboration with Stellantis. Fast forward to this year, and Samsung announced that it’s developing new batteries for major EV brands like Tesla and BMW.

The company is also building another battery manufacturing plant in Malaysia to bolster its production capacity. Clearly, Samsung SDI is doing all it can to maintain its position and play a major role in the global EV supply chain for the new era.

Other Samsung branches have partnered with manufacturers like Tesla and BMW to supply the companies with components such as camera systems and displays for in-car navigation and infotainment systems.
