Samsung launches industry’s fastest, 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM

Samsung has launched the industry’s fastest LPDDR5X DRAM with data transfer speeds of up to 8.5Gbps. The company’s new memory chips made using the 14nm EUV process have already been validated for use with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile platforms. We expect to see these new DRAM chips inside future high-end smartphones and ultra-thin laptops.

Earlier this year, Samsung achieved maximum data transfer speeds of up to 7.4Gbps and surpassed that milestone within a matter of months. Thanks to deeper collaboration with brands like Qualcomm, the South Korean firm was able to accelerate the availability of LPDDR5X DRAM by more than a year. These chips could be used with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor inside next year’s high-end smartphones and tablets.

Apart from high-end smartphones, LPDDR5X DRAM is also being used in laptops, high-performance computing devices, servers, and automobiles. Samsung has seen a robust growth of LPDDR5X DRAM chips in the automotive sector as more autonomous cars are capturing and processing a lot of data from sensors. In the high-performance computing space, LPDDR DRAM can help brands reduce power consumption, resulting in a significantly lower cost of ownership.

Daniel Lee, Executive VP of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “As LPDDR memory continues to broaden its usage beyond smartphones into AI and data center applications, strong collaboration between memory and SoC vendors is becoming all the more important. Samsung will continue to actively engage with innovators like Qualcomm Technologies to enhance ecosystem readiness for future LPDDR standards.
