Samsung is miles ahead of its competition in the curved monitor market

Samsung’s market share across segments has been a bit of a roller coaster ride of later. While Xiaomi managed to dethrone it as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung still reigns supreme in the smart TV space. A new report from Korea Herald tells us that Samsung Display’s supremacy also extends to the rather niche curved monitor market.

Samsung shipped about 1.09 million curved monitors in Q2 2021, which accounts for about 32% of the total market share. AOC/Phillips, MSI and Dell took the second, third and fourth place with 12%, 10% and 8% market shares, respectively.

Samsung is still the one to beat

Although Samsung is ahead of the pack in terms of raw units shipped, it still sold 21% fewer monitors compared to last year. Regardless of who takes the crown, Samsung Display still wins as it is still the world’s largest supplier of key monitor components.

Its arch-rival, LG, on the other hand, saw a 110% rise in shipments. LG and Acer, in particular, have been sourcing panels from companies like AU Optronics and China Star Optoelectronics Technology. Samsung Display saw a 36% drop in curved monitor shipments compared to last year. That drop is due to a range of other factors, though, and not just a few OEMs’ choices to stay away from Samsung.

Samsung’s Odyssey line of gaming monitors are considered by many to be the best piece of hardware money can buy in the here and now. While it caters to a niche, high-end demographic, it cements Samsung’s position at the top of the food chain. Curved monitors are sought after by only a handful of gamers, so the demand for them isn’t nearly as much.
