Samsung is helping domestic fabless chip firms create prototype designs

In another bid to foster domestic growth, Samsung’s chipset foundry division has decided to help a few South Korean fabless chip design houses create prototypes and validate pre-production concepts at reduced costs.

After a selection process of a few weeks, Samsung chose to help five fabless chip design houses, including DeepX, GLS, SKAi Chips, Semibrain, and Raontech. (via The Korea Herald)

Samsung will offer multi-project wafer shuttle services to these five startups. A multi-project wafer shuttle service allows chip designers to accommodate multiple chip prototypes on a single wafer for design verification, resulting in lower costs.

The project, partly subsidized by the South Korean government, will give the five selected companies 25 chances to book Samsung’s multi-project wafer services from August 2022 to July 2023. Samsung allows the prototype chip designs to be based on different technology nodes.

The Korean tech giant recently started manufacturing chipsets on 3nm technologies and celebrated the first shipment to clients. The company aims for 2nm manufacturing processes to be ready by the end of 2025.

Samsung Foundry president Choi Si-young said: “While Korea’s system semiconductor industry has far to go to narrow the gap with global leaders, it is important to make a concerted effort involving fabless chip designers […].”
