Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is coming in 2022 according to leaked schedule

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will go into production next year according to business plans that have surfaced detailing some of the company’s big launches in 2022.

The folks at TheElec seem to have got hold of Samsung’s 2022 production schedule, which has been translated by a leakster named FrontTron. It names the Galaxy Watch5 as going into production in Q3-Q4, which is the period from July to December. That could suggest a Galaxy Watch5 release date window around the same time we saw the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which landed in August this year.

It’s perhaps no huge surprise that another Samsung smartwatch is coming, as they usually land annually anyway, but it does potentially give us an idea of when we might see it.

There’s no information shared on what the Galaxy Watch 5 will be packing, but we think it’s safe to assume Google’s Wear OS will be on board once again. Samsung helped build the new version of Wear and is currently the only smartwatch available to buy running on Wear OS 3.0.

Compatible watches from the likes of Fossil and Movoi’s latest TicWatch range will have to wait until next year to see what new Wear has to offer outside of Samsung’s smartwatch.

This news about a production window for Samsung’s next smartwatch comes at at time where Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 took a bite out of Apple’s share of the market in 2021. That was according to an analyst report on global smartwatch shipments by Counterpoint Research, which suggested that the Watch 4 dominated Q3 shipments.

That’s good news for Samsung and Google and its Wear OS platform, which has so far struggled to dent the dominance of the Apple Watch and other smartwatch rivals too.

When the first rumors started to circulate that Samsung could ditch its own Tizen platform for Google’s, we were definitely sceptical of the move. While the experience of Google’s Wear on the Galaxy Watch 4 still feels very Tizen, Samsung and Google has outlined plans to evolve the platform over time. Plus, we’ve yet to really see Fitbit brought into the Wear equation since it was acquired by Google in early 2021.

We fully anticipate more new Wear OS smartwatches will land in 2022 and it looks like Samsung will be part of that new watch brigade to help give Google’s smartwatch platform a much needed lift.
