Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 gets World Cup update

Samsung has launched a FIFA World Cup-themed update for the Galaxy Watch 5 with a special edition new watch faces to download.

While we’ve seen official World Cup smartwatches from the likes of Hublot, this Galaxy Watch 5 update is 100% non-official.

The existing Galaxy Watch ‘Ball watch face’ has been retooled, and offers a World Cup flavor for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro. The watch face can be customized with the flag of each participating nation, which can be selected within the companion app.

The Ball flag designs are simple and eye-catching – although don’t really offer much in terms of interaction. And you won’t get things such as live scores or match updates, as we’ve seen on the Hublot Big Bang, which also runs Google’s Wear OS.

Users will also be able to customize hand styles and colors, and there are several animations, depending on your interactions with the watch.

It’s a meaty 500MB update, which is rolling out now to Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro models. There are only minor fixes in addition to the watch faves, so the AKV7 update is focused on delivering these World Cup-specific features.

Hopefully, it won’t take long to roll out, given that we’re already into the second week of the tournament, and many of the teams featured will soon be exiting the competition.
