Samsung ‘Dream Team’ to focus on new chipset, Galaxy S23 skips Exynos
It was rumored last week that Samsung has decided to build a new high-end custom processor for the Galaxy S series. This premium chipset is meant to emulate Apple’s successful M1 chip that the company now uses for its iPhones.
A new report today claims that Samsung has set up a ‘Dream Team’ to work on this project. Such will be the intensity of the focus on this project that it has been decided to not launch a new Exynos processor in 2023 and 2024. This would mean that the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 will not feature an Exynos chipset.
Samsung may not make a new high-end Exynos chip in 2023 and 2024
The report comes out of South Korea and claims Samsung is going to launch a dedicated team for this project in July with about 1,000 employees. Their job is to commercialize the first Galaxy-only chipset in 2025. Samsung sees this as a crucial project to improve its competitiveness in non-memory semiconductors.
Called the ‘Deam Platform One Team,” this joint task force has reportedly started the preparatory work for its official launch. TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, and Park Yong-in, head of Samsung’s LSI division, are jointly leading this task force. This dream time will include a large number of engineers who have developed the Exynos chipsets at the System LSI division and those who have coordinated the installation of the Exynos chipsets at the mobile division.
The Exynos is more of a general-purpose chip in that Samsung supplies it to other manufacturers as well. That’s not the case with Apple’s M1 which is exclusively used for the company’s own devices. Samsung’s Exynos chips have struggled to compete with flagships from Qualcomm.
Even though Samsung gave up on the idea of custom CPU cores a couple of years ago, a partnership with AMD for mobile graphics wasn’t enough to improve the Exynos 2200’s fortunes. Samsung’s own Galaxy S22 series uses more of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipsets compared to the Exynos 2200.
This new chipset that Samsung is working on will remain exclusive to the company’s own devices. Perhaps we may see it in the foldables as well. The rumor about Samsung not launching a new Exynos chipset in 2023 and 2024 is surprising. That would mean its Galaxy S23 and S24 flagships will use Qualcomm chipsets entirely.
Samsung wants to focus entirely on this new project and launch a brand new chip in 2025 that will blow the competition out of the water. One can certainly hope that it does but given Samsung’s track record with high-end chipsets, it would be best to keep your fingers crossed.
