Samsung DeX gets VMware Horizon support on flagship Galaxy devices

Samsung introduced Samsung DeX back in 2017. It lets you experience your compatible Galaxy flagship device in a PC-like interface on a connected monitor. Ever since most people started working from home because of the pandemic, they have been requesting to bring support for dual-screen VMware Horizon virtual desktops on Samsung DeX.

Well, it seems like their request has been heard. In an official blog, VMware announced that it is teaming up with Samsung to bring new features and optimizations to Samsung DeX. Notably, thanks to VMware’s Horizon and Workspace ONE, the flagship Samsung Galaxy device users can now use their device’s screen as a secondary display.

The VMware Horizon Client app will be required

VMware is also using Samsung DeX’s already existing dual-mode and other APIs. This is to bring support for the keyboard and mouse on both the connected display and the Galaxy device’s screen. Not only will VMware Horizon Windows instances appear on your Galaxy device’s screen, but you can also open and use Android apps in windowed form.

This eventually brings greater flexibility to the workspace. Because now you can keep your emails open, attend phone calls, and send text messages, while you use VMware on DeX. As already mentioned, you will only be able to use VMware Horizon on DeX-supported flagship devices. This includes the Galaxy S9, S10, S20, S21, Note8, Note9, Note10, Note20, and Z Fold phone series, as well as the Galaxy Tab S4, S5e, S6, and S7 tablet series.

In order to use VMware Horizon on Samsung DeX, you need to install the Horizon Client app on your compatible device. The app is available on the Google Play Store. Then, you need to log in to your Workspace ONE account. Once you do that, you will have access to all of your work apps, virtual apps, and desktops.
