Samsung announces Galaxy S23 and XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition for the US Military

Inspired by the success of the Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition, which Samsung says was adopted by thousands of DOD (Department of Defence) personnel across all service branches, the Korean tech giant has announced its new Tactical Edition portfolio, consisting of two new phones: Galaxy S23 and Galaxy XCover 6 Pro.

The Galaxy S23 and XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition phones are mission-ready and feature special apps for operators, such as the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) and the Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK). ATAK gives operators enhanced real-time situational awareness, while BATDOK collects and distributes real-time patient encounter information.

The two Tactical Edition phones also meet US military security requirements and are protected by Samsung Knox and Knox Dual Data at Rest (DualDAR), which meets NSA requirements for protecting confidential data.

Samsung DeX also plays a key role for these Tactical Edition phones, as the on-device desktop platform allows military law enforcement units to perform in-vehicle operations without needing a mounted laptop.

Galaxy S23 and XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition are”military tough”

The Tactical Edition phones share the same high build quality as the commercial products. The Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition is IP68-certified for dust and water resistance and offers Gorilla Glass Victus+ and Armor Aluminum protection. But in addition to these standard specifications, the Tactical Edition phone is also wrapped in a rugged military-grade case that can be chest-mounted or worn on the forearm.

The XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition also has an IP68 certificate. It is MIL-STD-810H compliant, meaning it can survive drops of up to 5 feet and operate effectively in a wide range of temperatures.

Samsung announced its two new Tactical Edition phones at SOF Week last week and says they are set to be launched later this summer, at which point, more screenshots will likely emerge. Samsung Business Insights USA says that the two new Tactical Edition smartphones “will be valuable tools that can help our warfighters achieve their missions.”
