Samsung and Apple want to manufacture more devices in India

In recent years, India has become one of Samsung’s main manufacturing hubs for smartphones and phone components. Now, Samsung is reportedly preparing to expand its production in India even more, as the country is launching a $2.1 billion plan to incentivize local production of more consumer devices. And according to reports, Apple has similar goals as the Korean tech giant, with both companies wanting to benefit from the $2.1 billion plan.

In the past, India successfully attracted companies like Samsung and Apple to produce smartphones and smartphone components locally. Now, India is trying to apply the same strategy it did with phones to other types of consumer electronics.

Samsung may rely more on India and less on China

According to Bloomberg, India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, said the country’s new $2.1 billion plan is meant to attract OEMs into boosting the local production of devices such as laptops, servers, tablets, and others.

“We’ve had considerable success and tailwinds in the smartphone segment and we have increased interest from the likes of Apple and Samsung in expanding and growing here,” said the Minister. He added that India is now essentially repeating that same strategy but widening it in scope to include other types of devices.

All the way back in 2017, Samsung announced plans to invest $620 million to double its smartphone production capacity in India. The country became the largest Samsung mobile device factory based on production capacity, churning out roughly 120 million units every year.
