Puma’s first smartwatch gets all of the sporty Wear OS goodies

Puma has unveiled its very first smartwatch at IFA 2019 and unsurprisingly, it’s going all in on the fitness features.

The sports brand giant signed a 10-year agreement with Fossil Group in 2018 to build smartwatches together, so this could be the first of many watches to come from the partnership.

This is a Wear OS smartwatch at heart so you can expect all the usual software features here like the ability to customize watch faces, download apps, notification support, get access to Google Assistant and all of the usual Wear OS extras.

There’s also Google Pay for contactless payments and you’ll be able to make use of Google Fit to track your workouts.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 3100 processor is also on board ensuring there’s the very latest chipset powering the performance. Though it does have just 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM like older generation Wear watches.

Those workouts will be tracked using the built-in GPS, heart rate monitor and the motion sensors to track indoor activities like pool swimming through third party apps. Puma will be throwing on its own interactive dial options to continue that sporty theme and put metrics like heart rate and steps firmly on show.

The Puma smartwatch’s design will be in keeping with its sports heritage and will be available in three colorways. There’s your pick of neon yellow, black and rose gold.

Those models will be partnered up with a textured silicone 16mm strap to make it suitable for making it through a sweaty workout. It’s not clear whether those straps are interchangeable, but considering most of Fossil’s smartwatches do offer that, we’d be surprised if it didn’t.

Those bands keep in place a 30mm sized watch case that features a 1.19-inch, 328ppi AMOLED display that measures in at 11mm thick and weighs 28g. If you want to go swimming with it, it’s waterproof up to 30 metres too.

One feature the Puma smartwatch does lack is a built-in speaker, which has started to appear on Fossil Group’s own smartwatches. So it seems this watch has more in common with Fossil’s Gen 4 smartwatches like the Fossil Sport.

You’ll be able to get the Puma smartwatch on your wrist in November and will be priced $275. We’ll hopefully be getting some more hands on time with it at IFA to find out if it’s a watch worth getting excited about.
